Mr. F''s 'the find' Mix.

Most of these songs are tracks taken from records that, at the time I had NO idea what I was buying. Some people know so much that they always know who's who in the land of records. I'm not one of those people. But DAMN do I love the surprise of buying cheap record and finding a track that turns out to be incredible. That's what it's all about really. You win some, you loose some when you're diggin around for shit. But the feeling of winning (Even if only 10% of the time) is well worth all those losses.
I picked some records out of my collection including some recent purchases, that fall in to this category.  Mad props to those DJ's mixing this kind of music to perfection. I don't think people realize how hard it is for these DJ's mixing live drums, funk, soul on vintage records.
Shadow and Chemist did that 45 gig?? Spinning nothing but vintage, mixing LIVE.
Anyway. This is just some songs put together. Maybe these are well known tracks to most, but I felt lucky, cool and original when I found them on these records.

Mr. Floyd Madlib Mix

Madlib man. Just started playing records and kept reaching for 'lib tracks. How about his new Beat Konducta (Dil Cosby Suite)? That record is PACKED with tracks. This dudes catalog of music is never ending.
I bought the Further Adventures of Lord Quas a couple of days after its release. The CD was at a listening station at Music Millennium in Portland (Its no longer open...Damn MP3's). That (I believe) was 2005. Since that day I've been addicted to Hip Hop. I've always been a huge music fan, and Hip Hop was Bone Thugs, Wu Tang, NAS, Biggie,(etc... )to me.
I went on a straight up Hip Hop history mission after getting that Quas' CD. Got some DJ tables, a Boss SP505 and thats what I'm in to today. Still addicted to Hip Hop beats and the music that makes them what they are.
Madlib is the shit.

Mr. Floyds Mix#2-Podcast

Usually when I record my mixes in to my Macbook, I go through Ableton Live. This time I went through Garageband. I haven't added any kind of effects to my previous mixes, but I wanted to add a bit of Garagebands subtle compression this time.
1 of my turntables (The one on the right) is giving a weak signal. I can actually see it when viewing the waveforms through my DAW. I can hear it on my monitor speakers as well. I've tried switching channels on my mixer and the issue follows my right turntable. Really, REALLY annoying. Something internal I guess, wiring, electronics maybe? Gonna have to investigate it this weekend.
Anyway....
Is Michael Jacksons'-Off The Wall not one of the best albums...EVER?? The entire album is classic. I started this mix off with 'Get On The Floor'. Not sure that this is my favorite on the album...not even sure I have a favorite. The whole album is SOLID.

The entire album is produced by Quincy Jones and the disco vibe is in full force. It's crazy to me that 'Thriller' is considered by most to be the definition of Michael Jackson. In my opinion Thriller can't even be compared to Off The Wall.
I think maybe OTW got the ball rolling, Michaels appeal for pop culture was starting to turn some heads and the powers that be knew they needed a HUGE follow up. Thriller would come to define Pop Music, making Michael Jackson The new King of the Pop world. Years later, after absolute CRAZINESS he somehow still holds on to this title. At least in my book.

Sheila E. was made famous due to her work with Prince (I think it's safe to call him that?). I included her Prince produced track Love Bizarre. Yea...nothing too special about this song, but it was one of the things that defined her career.

Anyone catch the Newcleus interview in Waxpoetics #27? If you haven't, hunt it down. Excellent article (as usual from WP).

Nothing out of the ordinary with this mix. Oh....I added a little "MrFloyd Mix" tag!!! You'll hear it at the beginning....and somewhere else at some point.
I had Newcleus' going in to Soul Sonic Force-Planet Rock, and it was working out pretty well. Went off though and I wasn't re-recording. So I killed it and ended the mix.
Afrika Bambaataa:
Is this not one of the BADDEST brother to ever live? He is the defining entity in hip hop for me.
I got some real nice albums from this guy, including the James Brown collaboration 12in.
Got a 80's disco feel here, with a straight up Breakin' ending (Newcleus). Just a fun mix.
Track listing of Mr. Floyd Mix#2 Podcast
1. Michael Jackson - Get On The Floor
2. Sheila E - Love Bizarre
3. Rick James - Dance Wit' Me
4. GQ - Disco Nights
5. Newcleus - Jam On It (Soul Sonic Force blending in @ the end)

Mr. Floyds Mix#1-Podcast

Out with the old, in with the new. My previous Podcast host ran out of room and I had to find a permanent solution, and by doing so my previous podcasts had to be deleted.
If you were stopping by often hopefully you subscribed in Itunes and have all the previous music casts on your hard drives.

From here on out I am going to stick with the MIX format, so no introductions or babbling by yours truly. Casts will be strictly music (and REALLY good music at that!).
or any others.

OK. Lets get down to it.

1st off I want to mention an album used for track#4 in the podcast:

Ramsey Lewis-Mother Natures Son is a collection of Beatles' songs composed by Ramsey Lewis. I first heard the track "Julia" in the J Rocc Syndromes 2 mix. This song is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. There really isn't any other way to describe it. The subtle breakdowns, the perfect drum lines and of course Lewis' piano turn this track into something spectacular. If it was up to me I would include this song on every mix I made. The entire album is priceless. Lewis' funky jazz sound is a perfect example of music I love. I have other Ramsey Lewis albums (all are great) but something about his rendition of these Beatles songs really hits home for me.

Another album (Note) I want to make is Esther Phillips' Home Is Where The Hatred Is (Track #6). This song is on her CTI release: From A Whisper To A Scream. I don't own this album (I will when I am able to hunt it down at one of the Goodwills I patrol on a weekly basis) but I do own the album: The Best Of The US From CTI/Kudu Records. (info here) This song is seriously potent. Her frustration with the ghetto and the junkies that populate it...really great material.

And lastly...If you haven't picked up the Flying Lotus SShh EP (Only 500 pressings), do yourself a favor and hunt it down before it's gone. You'll hear a Madvillain remix that only FL could get away with.

Tracklisting of Mr. Floyd Mix#1 Podcast:
1. Faze O - Riding High
2. Teddy Pendergrass - Come On Over To My Place
3. Pharcyde (Dilla Instrumental) - Runnin'
4. Ramsey Lewis - Julia
5. Ice T - Killer
6. Esther Phillips - Home Is Where The Hatred Is
7. Dilla - $
8. Dusty Fingers 15 - Spiders
9. Flying Lotus - Shadows Of Tomorrow (Madvillain Remix)
10. Stetsasonic - DBC Let The Music Play (With Cuts of Beastie Boys A Capella)

Enjoy!!!!
